Rain and snow are forecasted to impact much of central Illinois this weekend, bringing hazardous conditions to key roadways. Beginning late Saturday and lasting through early Monday, heavy snow is expected north of I-70, while freezing rain is likely to affect areas farther south. Drivers should exercise caution and prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, IL, snowfall accumulations could reach several inches north of I-74. South of I-70, freezing rain may lead to icy conditions, making travel treacherous. The storm system will also bring plummeting temperatures, with daytime highs dropping into the 20s by Friday and into the teens by early next week.
For Thursday, central Illinois will experience a mix of rain and snow, primarily along and north of I-74. Snow accumulation is expected to be less than an inch. By Friday, conditions will clear briefly, offering sunshine and a high near 25 degrees. However, temperatures will dip to lows around 10 degrees overnight.
The cold will intensify into the new week. Monday night could see temperatures plunge near zero, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Residents are urged to prepare for the extended cold by checking heating systems and protecting outdoor pipes.
