Champaign, Illinois – Thunderstorms are expected to sweep into Champaign and much of central Illinois by early Friday afternoon, potentially impacting travel and outdoor events across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms could begin developing after 1 p.m. Friday with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms continuing through the evening. Winds may gust near 15 mph, and drivers along U.S. Route 45 and I-72 should use caution during peak travel hours due to wet roads and brief downpours.

Areas across De Witt, Piatt, Vermilion, and Champaign counties may see off-and-on storms through Monday. Friday night into Saturday looks partly cloudy with lingering rain chances early Saturday morning, especially for eastern counties including Vermilion and Edgar.

By Monday, skies will begin to clear with highs returning to the upper 70s and low 80s. Tuesday and Wednesday bring drier conditions and more sunshine, offering a much-needed break from the stormy pattern.

⚠️ Weather warnings remain possible if thunderstorm intensity increases over the weekend. Monitor local alerts and consider delaying travel if storms intensify.
