Chicago, Illinois – Strong winds and building waves will make Lake Michigan beaches dangerous through Sunday morning as storms push across northern Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until noon Sunday for Lake, Northern Cook, and Central Cook Counties, including all Chicago beaches. Waves between 3 to 6 feet are expected as winds shift from the north late Sunday, creating life-threatening swimming conditions for anyone venturing into the water.

A Limited Thunderstorm Risk will continue into Sunday for the Chicago metro, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Highs will reach near 79°F, but wind gusts up to 15 mph could make conditions feel cooler near the lake. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water, especially around piers, breakwalls, and jetties.

Monday night turns mostly clear and calm, with lows around 69°F and northeast winds relaxing to 5 mph.

Five-Day Forecast (Mon, July 7 – Fri, July 11):

  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny with a high near 85°F. Slight chance of storms late Tuesday night.
  • Wednesday: Slight chance of showers and storms after 1 p.m. High near 78°F, breezy in the afternoon.
