Brooklyn, IL – Sunday storms are expected to rattle much of southwestern Illinois, bringing strong winds, thunder, and heavy rain across the Brooklyn area and along I-55. Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions throughout the day, with the chance for storms increasing after 10 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service, showers will begin early Sunday morning and become stronger into the afternoon. Thunderstorms are most likely between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., with gusts reaching 25 mph. A 90% chance of rain makes this one of the region’s wettest days of the week. Rain and possible thunderstorms will return Sunday night, tapering off before midnight.
Drivers along I-55 and connecting roads should allow extra travel time and watch for ponding water and reduced visibility. Outdoor plans should be moved indoors, especially during the afternoon hours.
Looking ahead, Monday will bring a brief break with partly sunny skies and a high near 53°F. However, the calm won’t last. Rain is expected to return Tuesday night with a 60% chance of showers, increasing to 80% by Wednesday as another round of thunderstorms rolls in. Highs will peak near 75°F by midweek before tapering into the 60s by Friday.
