Central Illinois will experience a weather shift overnight as rain and thunderstorms move in from the northwest. Areas along the Illinois River and north of I-72 are expected to see heavy rainfall, with totals between 0.5 to 1 inch, and the possibility of isolated hail. Residents in Peoria, Bloomington, and surrounding regions should prepare for wet conditions beginning around 10 p.m. tonight.

According to the National Weather Service, storms could linger into early Friday morning, impacting the morning commute. While the heaviest rain is forecasted north of the I-72 corridor, other central Illinois areas, including Springfield and Champaign, may still experience moderate rainfall between 0.25 to 0.5 inches. Residents should ensure storm drains and gutters are cleared of debris to prevent localized flooding.

Friday morning’s rain will give way to clearing skies by the afternoon, with temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s. As a cold front pushes through, temperatures will drop sharply by Friday night, dipping into the upper 30s.

Looking ahead to the weekend, expect sunny skies but cooler conditions. Saturday’s highs will hover between 60 and 66 degrees, with overnight lows plunging to the low 30s. Sunday will see similar weather with highs in the low to mid-60s. Homeowners should prepare for the drop in temperatures by securing outdoor plants and insulating pipes if necessary.
