Chicago, IL – A mix of rain and snow is expected to hit the Chicago area Friday, increasing the risk of localized ice jam flooding along rivers.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a storm system will bring rain starting Thursday night, transitioning to a rain-snow mix Friday morning. Rainfall amounts could reach half an inch or more, causing runoff into frozen streams and rivers, potentially leading to flooding. The Kankakee, Rock, and Fox Rivers are particularly at risk, with residents advised to monitor conditions closely.
Temperatures will warm to the low 50s Thursday before dropping into the 30s Friday. Winds could reach 25 mph, making for slick roads and reduced visibility. Rain will taper off Friday evening, with mostly cloudy skies into the weekend.
Saturday will see highs in the upper 30s with partly sunny skies, while Sunday remains cool with highs near 37°F. Another system may bring additional precipitation early next week.
Residents in flood-prone areas should stay updated on forecasts and prepare for possible high water levels.
