Champaign, IL – A midweek frost advisory and rising chances of weekend storms are putting a chill on central Illinois’ spring momentum.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. CDT Wednesday for a large swath of Illinois, including Champaign, Urbana, Bloomington, and surrounding communities. Temperatures as low as 33°F could damage unprotected outdoor plants, especially along the I-74 corridor. Residents should cover sensitive vegetation and avoid early morning planting Wednesday.

By Wednesday afternoon, conditions improve with sunny skies and a high near 62°F. But that brief warmth gives way to more unsettled spring weather heading into the weekend. A chance of showers returns Thursday, and stronger storms are possible by Friday evening, with breezy conditions and highs pushing into the low 80s.

Roadways like I-57 and Route 150 could see reduced visibility and wet pavement conditions by late Friday, potentially disrupting travel or Easter weekend plans. Winds could gust above 30 mph Thursday and Friday.

Extended 5-Day Spring Weather Outlook for Champaign, IL:

  • Wednesday: Sunny, high near 62°F.
  • Thursday: Partly sunny, 30% chance of afternoon showers, high near 66°F.
  • Friday: Breezy and partly sunny, 50% chance of showers by evening, high near 81°F.
  • Saturday: Showers likely, 40% chance, high near 64°F.
  • Sunday: Showers remain possible, high around 60°F.
