Chicago, Illinois – Drivers and commuters south of I-80 should plan for scattered thunderstorms Thursday and Friday, with brief downpours and gusty winds possible.

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, limited thunderstorm risk continues into Friday night, especially for areas including Kankakee, Iroquois, and southern Cook County. The most active window appears to be Thursday night through late Friday, with isolated lightning and winds gusting up to 25 mph.

While the immediate Chicago metro will see mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 60s Thursday, areas farther south—especially along and below the I-80 corridor—may see spotty thunderstorm development. Rain totals are expected to stay under a quarter inch, though brief heavier cells could impact visibility on roadways.

Thursday brings a temporary cooldown with highs near 62°F in the city and lower 60s across the region. Skies will remain mostly clear overnight before clouds return Friday. Although only a slight chance of showers is expected Friday and Friday night, the NWS notes isolated thunderstorms are still possible.

Anyone with weekend plans should stay weather-aware as more organized rain returns by Sunday. No severe weather is expected, but local downpours and changing conditions could disrupt travel and outdoor events.

Five-Day Weather Outlook for Chicago (June 4–9):
