Champaign, IL – A major rain system is set to impact central and southeast Illinois tonight, bringing up to two inches of rainfall in some areas, with higher amounts expected east of I-57. The National Weather Service warns that urban flooding could develop in areas with clogged drains, and poor drainage locations are especially vulnerable. Residents are urged to monitor conditions closely and avoid driving through flooded roadways.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest rain will occur after 6 p.m. Saturday, continuing through Sunday morning. Cities like Lawrenceville and Effingham could see rainfall exceeding two inches, particularly along and south of I-70. Light winds and saturated ground increase the likelihood of flash flooding, making it essential for residents to secure outdoor items and prepare for potential disruptions.

The rain will taper off Sunday evening, giving way to drier conditions early next week. Monday will be partly cloudy with a high of 47°F, but another rain system is expected to move in Monday night, bringing colder temperatures by New Year’s Day. Highs for the holiday are predicted to reach 33°F, with a chance of morning sun before clouds settle in.

The five-day outlook shows colder, drier weather starting midweek, with temperatures dropping to the teens Thursday night. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time during heavy rainfall periods.
