Chicago, Illinois – Strong evening storms could bring 60 mph wind gusts to parts of northern Illinois Tuesday night, especially along and west of the I-39 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon and continue through the evening hours. The greatest threat for severe activity, including damaging winds, lies northwest of I-55—especially in areas like DeKalb, Lee, Ogle, and La Salle counties.
The storms are forecast to move northeast at 40 to 45 mph, with the primary hazard being strong, localized wind gusts. Cities including Rockford, Dixon, and Freeport should monitor conditions closely during the evening commute and early nighttime hours.
Though spotter activation is not currently expected, residents should remain weather-aware as isolated severe cells may still develop. Downed branches, minor power outages, and hazardous travel are all possible in areas where wind gusts peak. Drivers along I-39, I-88, and US-20 should be cautious, especially in open rural stretches.
The thunderstorm risk shifts mainly south of I-80 by Wednesday, with additional chances returning Thursday night and again Sunday. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects and avoid unnecessary travel if strong storms approach.
