Chicago, Illinois – Thunderstorms could stir up travel trouble for Chicago commuters and surrounding suburbs starting Tuesday afternoon as a severe weather risk moves in across northeast Illinois. The National Weather Service has flagged potential gusts and lightning as part of a multi-day spring weather pattern that stretches into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night brings a limited thunderstorm risk, with a Level 1 out of 5 severe thunderstorm classification possible. Gusty winds and lightning are the main concerns, especially along I-55, I-290, and I-90 corridors. Drivers should be alert for sudden downpours and low visibility during the evening commute.

While Monday remains quiet aside from lingering clouds, Tuesday’s weather turns active after 1 p.m. with a 20% chance of storms. That chance climbs to 50% by Tuesday night. South winds will increase to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, making outdoor plans and evening travel potentially hazardous.

Wednesday will see isolated showers and storms after 4 p.m., then again overnight. Although not severe, these may disrupt after-school events or evening commutes. By Thursday, skies clear slightly with only a slight chance of lingering showers.
