Kankakee, IL – A high-wind advisory issued for portions of Illinois remains in effect Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., as gusts up to 45 mph are forecasted. Motorists on I-57 and I-65 should exercise caution, especially those in high-profile vehicles, due to potential crosswinds that can make steering difficult.
According to the National Weather Service, south winds of 20 to 25 mph, with higher gusts, could impact counties across central and east-central Illinois, including Kankakee, Joliet, and Ford. Local residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, as wind gusts could dislodge objects, posing safety risks. The gusts are also expected to damage tree limbs, leading to possible power outages across the affected areas.
Those heading to Election Day polling stations should consider allowing extra travel time due to potential delays from the strong winds. The Illinois Department of Transportation suggests avoiding outdoor work, particularly on rooftops or scaffolding, until conditions improve.
In addition to today’s advisory, blustery conditions are expected to continue this week, with sustained winds remaining at 15–20 mph through Thursday. Temperatures will stay mild, ranging from 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, dipping to around 40 at night. Wednesday and Thursday will see cloudy skies, with a chance of rain returning by Friday morning.
Residents are urged to stay informed on evolving weather conditions throughout Election Day and keep updated on any potential changes to the advisory by following local news and the National Weather Service.
