Springfield, IL – Drivers across central Illinois and northwestern Indiana should exercise caution early Saturday morning as slick road conditions and black ice create hazardous travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, damp pavement combined with freezing ground temperatures has led to icy patches across major roadways. Despite air temperatures hovering above freezing, road surfaces remain slippery, especially on untreated routes. The affected region includes Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and surrounding areas.

In northwestern Indiana, the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana warns that wet roads from Friday’s rainfall may freeze overnight as colder air moves in. Cities such as Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Lafayette could experience icy conditions on bridges, overpasses, and lesser-traveled roads.

Motorists should allow extra time for travel, maintain a safe following distance, and reduce speeds when driving on potentially icy roads. Black ice is especially dangerous due to its near-invisibility. Officials recommend avoiding sudden braking and using gentle steering corrections if skidding occurs.

Temperatures are expected to remain cold through Saturday morning before gradual warming in the afternoon reduces the ice risk. Stay updated with local road condition alerts and drive cautiously.
