Evansville, Indiana – A seasonable winter pattern is expected to bring near-normal precipitation to southern Illinois and Indiana heading into mid-January, with above-normal temperatures supporting periods of rain and occasional snow across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, temperatures across southern Illinois and southern Indiana are favored to run above normal during the January 9–13 period, while precipitation trends near seasonal averages. This setup allows precipitation to fall mainly as rain at times, with snow mixing in when colder air briefly moves through.

Communities across southern Illinois, including Carbondale, Mount Vernon, and Marion, along with southern Indiana cities such as Evansville, Jasper, and Bloomington, could see changing precipitation types depending on timing. Rain is more likely during daytime hours, while overnight and early morning periods could allow snow to mix in as temperatures dip.

Travel impacts are expected to be limited overall, though brief slick spots could develop on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses if temperatures fall near freezing during precipitation. Routes including I-64, I-69, I-57, and U.S. 41 may see variable conditions during temperature swings.

Drivers are encouraged to stay alert for changing road conditions as the pattern evolves. Additional advisories may be issued closer to mid-January if colder air lingers longer than expected or if precipitation timing shifts toward colder periods.
