Chicago, IL – Freezing rain and mist overnight led to significant ice accumulation across northern Illinois, with major airports reporting up to 0.15 inches of ice. The highest totals were recorded at Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Aurora, both measuring 0.15 inches of accretion.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, automated surface observation systems detected ice buildup across multiple locations. Midway Airport recorded 0.14 inches, while Waukegan and DuPage airports reported 0.12 inches. Smaller accumulations, around 0.07 to 0.10 inches, were observed at Valparaiso, Chicago Executive Airport, and the NWS Chicago office.
The icy conditions have created hazardous travel impacts across the region, with slick roads and possible flight delays. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, particularly on untreated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses.
Temperatures are expected to remain near freezing, which could prolong icy conditions through the morning hours. Travelers should check flight statuses and allow extra time for commutes.
Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel until road crews can fully address the icy buildup. More freezing rain is possible later this week, making continued vigilance essential for safe travel.
