Springfield, Ill. – A dangerous stretch of heat is gripping Central Illinois this weekend, with heat index values expected to reach up to 109° today and continue into midweek. A Heat Advisory is in effect through Wednesday, and breezy southwest winds could worsen conditions for outdoor workers and travelers.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat indices from 98° to 106° will persist across the region, including cities like Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign. Southwest winds gusting up to 30 mph will drive hot, humid air deeper into the state. Scattered thunderstorms may develop Tuesday and Wednesday, offering limited relief.

Cities across Sangamon, Macon, and Vermilion counties are expected to see highs in the low to mid-90s through at least Wednesday, with overnight lows staying stubbornly in the mid-70s. With only a 30% chance of rain midweek, the heat is expected to remain the dominant concern.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Avoid outdoor work if possible and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

Heat advisories are likely to be extended or upgraded if conditions worsen.
