Lincoln, IL – Central Illinois residents are urged to exercise caution as freezing rain expands this morning, threatening road conditions and power outages. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, effective through noon, with the greatest impact expected west of the Galesburg to Havana line.

According to the NWS, freezing rain began after 4 a.m., creating slick roads and hazardous travel conditions. Ice accumulation of up to a quarter-inch is forecast, particularly in Peoria, Stark, Fulton, Knox, and Schuyler counties. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice buildup, with travel becoming nearly impossible in some areas.

Drivers should avoid travel if possible or take precautions such as slowing down and keeping a safe following distance. Residents are also advised to prepare for potential power outages by charging devices and gathering emergency supplies. For road updates, visit GettingAroundIllinois.com.

Looking ahead, the system is expected to transition to rain later today as temperatures rise into the mid-40s. Sunday will bring drier conditions with highs reaching the mid-50s, offering relief from Saturday’s icy start. Rain returns by Sunday evening, continuing through Monday, before temperatures dip back into the 40s by midweek.

Stay tuned to local forecasts for updates on this developing system and exercise caution on untreated surfaces.
