Momence, IL – Officials have issued a flood advisory for the Kankakee River near Momence due to an ice jam, with water levels expected to remain near flood stage.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the advisory remains in effect until further notice as the jam continues to impact river conditions. The blockage is causing fluctuating water levels, which could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, including wetlands and farmland.
In response, the Will County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has activated a warm water siphon from the Dresden Energy Center to help melt ice on the Kankakee River. The activation, scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, aims to prevent further blockages and mitigate flood risks.
Residents along the river, particularly those in flood-prone areas, are advised to monitor conditions closely and take precautions. Authorities warn that ice jams can shift unexpectedly, leading to rapid water level changes with little warning.
