McLeansboro, IL – Flash flooding has been reported across parts of Hamilton County, prompting urgent safety warnings for residents through late Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 5:15 p.m. CDT for Hamilton County. As of 11:10 a.m., emergency management officials reported water flowing across multiple county roads, with rainfall totals still rising.

Storms are expected to bring an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain, increasing the threat of flooding across small creeks, streams, low-lying roads, and urban areas with poor drainage. Impacted communities include McLeansboro, Dahlgren, Broughton, Macedonia, and Belle Prairie City.

Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways and obey barricades. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains a critical safety reminder, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.

The warning comes during a season when southern Illinois typically experiences increased rainfall. However, today’s conditions are producing more rapid flooding than usual, increasing concern for rural and low-lying areas.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts, prepare for potential evacuations, and avoid unnecessary travel until the warning expires.

Stay tuned to the National Weather Service and local emergency officials for updates as the situation evolves.
