Chicago, IL – Residents near Chicago Midway Airport are facing a wintry mix of snow and dangerously cold wind chills Thursday night into Friday. Snowfall is expected to taper off before sunrise Friday, but untreated roads may remain slick, making morning commutes hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow accumulations of less than half an inch are possible overnight, with wind gusts reaching 25 mph. Wind chills could plummet to as low as -15 degrees in interior parts of northern Illinois tonight. This combination of icy conditions and freezing temperatures poses risks for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Friday will see mostly sunny skies, but temperatures will remain frigid, with a high of 21 degrees. Winds from the northwest will keep the wind chill near -9 degrees during the day. Motorists are advised to exercise caution on major roads, including I-55 and I-90, where icy patches may linger.
Looking ahead, Saturday promises clear skies and slightly warmer conditions, with highs nearing 36 degrees. However, overnight lows will dip back to 18 degrees. Sunday will offer another sunny day, but cold temperatures will persist into next week.
Residents should bundle up, limit outdoor exposure, and check for updated forecasts to stay informed about changing weather conditions. The NWS advises that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes at these wind chill levels. Stay prepared with extra clothing layers and emergency supplies if traveling.
