Champaign, IL – Residents across Illinois should prepare for a sharp change in weather midweek as warmer, windy conditions on Wednesday give way to freezing drizzle and colder air by Thursday. Morning commuters, especially along I-57, are urged to remain cautious due to the potential for slick roads.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), southwest winds gusting up to 40 mph will push warmer air into the region on Wednesday, raising temperatures to the mid-40s. However, a low chance (20%) of freezing drizzle east of I-57 could lead to hazardous conditions early Wednesday morning. Winds are expected to shift to the west by evening, ushering in a steep drop in temperatures.

By Thursday morning, wind chills across central Illinois will plummet to near or below zero, posing a risk of frostbite for those outside for extended periods. Gusts as high as 38 mph could further intensify cold conditions.

The five-day outlook shows a brief reprieve on Friday with highs near 31°F under sunny skies. The weekend will see temperatures rebound slightly, peaking in the mid-40s by Saturday.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects ahead of the strong winds and plan extra travel time if heading out Wednesday morning. Those traveling overnight into Thursday should dress warmly and prepare for subzero wind chills.
