Chicago, IL – Residents across northern Illinois should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures and the return of snow by midweek. After a mild Monday with highs nearing 50 degrees, an Arctic front will push through, sending temperatures plummeting and bringing wind chills as low as -20 by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, light rain and drizzle are expected overnight into Monday, particularly east of I-55. Monday will remain mild but breezy, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. By Tuesday, colder air takes hold, dropping highs to the low 30s, with blustery conditions worsening into Wednesday. Snow showers are expected to develop late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, creating slick spots on area roadways, especially during the morning commute.
Wednesday’s high temperatures will struggle to reach 30 degrees, while strong winds will create dangerously low wind chills between 0 and -10 degrees. By Thursday, the cold intensifies further, with highs in the teens and lows dipping to the single digits. Wind chills may drop to -20 in some areas. Snowfall totals are expected to be light but could be accompanied by periods of reduced visibility due to wind gusts.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor exposure, secure loose objects, and check local road conditions if traveling.
