Chicago, Illinois – Swimmers along Lake Michigan’s shores should stay out of the water through Monday, as dangerous rip currents and large waves threaten popular beaches from Wisconsin to northwestern Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a fast-moving front will sweep down the lake Sunday afternoon, producing high wave action and life-threatening currents through late Monday. The high swim risk stretches from Waukegan and Evanston through Chicago and into Gary and Chesterton, Indiana. Some waves could exceed six feet, especially Sunday evening.

Authorities warn that these rapidly changing conditions have previously led to drownings, even when the weather appears calm. Beachgoers are urged to avoid piers, breakwalls, and all open water activities, and to obey posted beach closures. The risk extends to most beaches in Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and northwest Indiana.

The warning coincides with a busy weekend at the lake, prompting officials to stress water safety. Lifeguards may limit access to the water entirely at some beaches.

The high swim risk remains in effect until Monday evening, with updated advisories possible if conditions worsen.
