Idaho Falls, Idaho – Severe thunderstorms packing wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail as large as golf balls are expected to hit parts of Idaho and Wyoming this evening, with the most dangerous conditions possible through 9 p.m. MDT Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for eastern and southeastern Idaho, as well as western and central Wyoming. High-based supercells are developing across the region and may intensify rapidly, producing damaging winds and isolated large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
Cities including Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Jackson, Riverton, and Casper are under the watch zone. Travelers on U.S. Highways 26, 89, and 191 should prepare for sudden wind shifts, poor visibility, and hazardous hail conditions. Strong downdrafts may down trees and power lines, increasing the risk of outages and road closures during peak travel hours.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor NOAA weather alerts. While tornadoes are not the primary concern, fast-developing cells could shift rapidly, prompting local warnings.
Storm threats are expected to taper off later tonight, but new watches or warnings may be issued if storm cells redevelop.
