Pocatello, ID – A significant winter storm is set to impact southern Idaho, bringing heavy snowfall and gusty winds from Wednesday evening through Friday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for multiple regions, including the Bear River Range, Franklin/Eastern Oneida Region, Marsh and Arbon Highlands, Raft River Region, and Southern Hills/Albion Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will begin Wednesday afternoon, with rain at lower elevations transitioning into snow as temperatures drop. Areas below 6,000 feet can expect 2 to 6 inches of snow, while higher elevations could see between 10 to 20 inches. Winds may gust up to 30 mph, further reducing visibility and making travel hazardous.

Mountain passes will be particularly treacherous, with difficult to impossible travel conditions anticipated. The storm is expected to impact commutes on Wednesday evening, Thursday morning and evening, and Friday morning. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511.idaho.gov.

Residents in affected areas should prepare for rapidly changing road and visibility conditions. Travelers are urged to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, a flashlight, and blankets. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm’s peak to ensure safety.
