Idaho Falls, Idaho – Gardeners and growers in eastern Idaho should act quickly as a frost advisory takes effect early Friday, threatening sensitive vegetation across the Upper Snake River Plain.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, temperatures could dip as low as 30°F between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Friday. The advisory affects the Arco/Mud Lake Desert and communities including Idaho Falls, Rexburg, St. Anthony, Mud Lake, and the Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Cold air pooling overnight is expected to produce frost across low-lying areas and open fields. Uncovered outdoor plants may suffer damage or be killed, prompting officials to urge residents to bring potted plants indoors or cover gardens with breathable cloth.

The chill follows a stretch of mild spring temperatures, catching some growers off guard. Agricultural zones near the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and rural farms surrounding U.S. Route 20 may be especially vulnerable.

This advisory marks one of the last expected frost threats of the season. However, NWS forecasters warn that additional cold nights are still possible in early May. Another update will be issued if conditions worsen or the advisory is extended.
