Boise, ID – An unusually late cold snap is expected to bring the season’s first 20°F low to Boise this weekend, marking one of the latest occurrences on record. Residents should prepare for freezing temperatures starting Saturday night, with lows around 18°F forecasted.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, this season is among the rare few where temperatures have stayed above 20°F well into January. The last time Boise’s first 20°F low came this late was January 10, 1918. This weekend’s drop would make it the second-latest in recorded history.
Sunday will see mostly sunny skies, but daytime highs will remain chilly, peaking at 34°F. Winds from the northwest at 5-7 mph may add to the cold, particularly in the evening. By Sunday night, temperatures will dip to 19°F, with light winds contributing to brisk overnight conditions.
The extended forecast shows the cold trend continuing into midweek. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday will remain sunny with a high near 31°F, followed by lows around 16°F Monday night. Tuesday and Wednesday will see similar conditions, with partly cloudy skies and lows in the high teens.
Residents are urged to take precautions to protect exposed pipes and check on vulnerable neighbors during these freezing temperatures. Pets should be brought indoors, and extra layers are advised for anyone venturing outside.
Stay tuned for updates on potential snowfall late next week as the pattern shifts.
