Stanley, Idaho – A minor earthquake rattled central Idaho early Thursday morning, shaking an area west-northwest of Stanley with a 2.5 magnitude tremor.
According to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, the quake struck at 5:06 a.m. UTC (11:06 p.m. MDT Tuesday) roughly 19 kilometers WNW of Stanley, with a depth of 9 kilometers. No damage or injuries were reported, and no citizen reports have been filed so far.
Though relatively small, quakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the seismically active region near the Sawtooth Fault. The tremor may have been lightly felt by residents in Custer County, though confirmation is still pending through USGS’s citizen science reporting system.
No disruptions to utilities or transportation have been announced. Still, emergency officials remind residents in the area to remain aware of aftershocks and ensure emergency kits are updated.
The event adds to a pattern of low-level seismic activity in central Idaho. Authorities will continue to monitor the area, and residents can view nearby seismicity or contribute felt reports through USGS resources.
