Sandpoint, ID – A backcountry avalanche warning is in effect for northern Idaho and western Montana through 6 a.m. Sunday, as heavy snowfall and strong winds have created dangerous conditions.

According to the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center, the warning covers the Selkirk Mountains and the West and East Cabinet Mountains above 4,000 feet. Backcountry travelers can easily trigger large avalanches, some of which may release naturally.

Experts warn that heavy snowfall has formed unstable slabs over fragile snow layers, increasing the likelihood of avalanches traveling long distances, even into lower elevations and mature forests. Travel in avalanche terrain is strongly discouraged during this period.

The National Weather Service in Spokane relayed the warning, advising outdoor enthusiasts to stay updated through Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center and Avalanche.org for further details.

Residents and visitors should avoid risky terrain and monitor conditions closely, as similar avalanche hazards may exist beyond the advisory area.
