North Carolina drivers are urged to exercise caution Wednesday morning as light snow and freezing temperatures create hazardous road conditions, particularly along the I-40 corridor. Overnight snow showers have left up to 1.5 inches of accumulation in some areas, with icy patches forming as temperatures dip into the mid-20s.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, light snow is tapering off across Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, and Union counties. However, untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses remain slick, increasing the risk of black ice. Commuters should reduce speeds, allow extra travel time, and stay vigilant for icy patches on less-traveled roadways.
Road conditions are expected to improve by mid-morning as sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures melt lingering ice. Highs will reach the upper 40s by Wednesday afternoon, bringing some relief to affected areas.
Looking ahead, the North Carolina Piedmont region will enjoy mostly clear skies through Friday before a slight chance of rain or snow returns with a weekend cold front.
Motorists are encouraged to check local weather updates before heading out and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles during winter weather conditions.
