Grand Junction, CO – A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through late Sunday night for areas near the Roaring Fork River due to a potential ice jam release that could cause a rapid increase in water levels and flow.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Junction, water levels on the Roaring Fork River above Difficult Creek have risen by two feet since Thanksgiving, signaling the likelihood of an ice jam. A minor release occurred on Friday, but rising levels suggest additional releases may happen on Saturday or Sunday.
The affected areas include the Central Colorado River Basin and the Gore and Elk Mountains/Central Mountain Valleys, which encompass Carbondale, Basalt, and Snowmass. Authorities are urging anglers and anyone near the river to exercise extreme caution. Debris and ice flowing in the river could create hazardous conditions.
Residents and visitors are advised to monitor weather updates and prepare to move to higher ground if conditions worsen. Additional safety tips and updates can be found at National Weather Service Flood Safety.
Emergency management officials emphasize the importance of avoiding the river until the situation stabilizes.
