Cleveland, OH – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Northern Ohio and Northwestern Pennsylvania starting early Sunday morning. Freezing rain and icy conditions are expected to create hazardous roadways and slippery sidewalks throughout the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that a band of freezing rain will move in during the pre-dawn hours, beginning as snow before transitioning to rain. Sub-freezing temperatures on road surfaces will allow the rain to freeze on contact, forming a light glaze of ice. Areas most affected include Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Erie, and Meadville. The advisory remains active from 4 a.m. to noon in most areas, with some locations under alert through Sunday night.

Travelers should prepare for very slippery conditions on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. The Ohio Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission strongly recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during the advisory. Motorists who must drive should reduce speeds and allow extra time.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by late Sunday morning in some areas, improving road conditions. However, colder spots in higher elevations or shaded areas may remain slick into Sunday evening.

Residents are also urged to take precautions on sidewalks, driveways, and outdoor stairs, where ice could increase the risk of slips and falls.
