Buffalo, NY – A significant lake-effect snowstorm has thrown Black Friday travel plans into disarray, as New York State Police implement a commercial vehicle ban across major highways in Western New York. The restrictions, which take effect at 3 p.m. Friday, come at a time when millions are traveling home following Thanksgiving.

According to the New York State Police, the ban applies to empty and tandem commercial vehicles on the following roadways:

Interstate 86, from the Pennsylvania state line to Interstate 390

State Route 219, from the Pennsylvania state line to Interstate 90

Interstate 90 (New York State Thruway), from Exit 53 to the Pennsylvania state line

The National Weather Service has warned of heavy lake-effect snow, which is expected to make driving conditions dangerous, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Authorities are urging travelers to delay or reroute their journeys if possible to avoid unsafe conditions.

With roadways likely to become treacherous, travelers returning from Thanksgiving celebrations or shopping for Black Friday deals are encouraged to plan for delays and exercise caution.
