New York – A frigid dawn grips Buffalo this morning with temperatures barely above single digits and the first bursts of lake effect snow starting to build northeast of Lake Erie. The air is sharp and still, the horizon blurring into steady gray as another December snow event sets in across western New York.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, snow showers will intensify later today and persist through Wednesday, dropping 1 to 3 inches in some areas, particularly along the Niagara Frontier and I-90 corridor. Drivers should expect reduced visibility, slick intersections, and rapidly changing road conditions, especially during the afternoon and evening commute.

By Wednesday, temperatures rise briefly near 40°F, allowing rain to mix with snow, but forecasters warn of another quick freeze Wednesday night as readings plunge back into the low 20s. That could create flash-freeze conditions, leaving icy patches on untreated surfaces by early Thursday.

Beyond midweek, a reinforcing shot of cold air sweeps in, keeping highs near 30°F to 32°F through the weekend. Another clipper system late Friday could bring a fresh coating of snow, part of a broader Great Lakes pattern expected to persist into next week (Dec. 11–17).

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 9–13)

  • Tuesday: High 34°F, snow likely, 1–2” possible.
  • Wednesday: High 40°F, rain/snow mix.
  • Thursday: High 29°F, snow showers, breezy.
  • Friday: High 31°F, chance of snow.
  • Saturday: High 28°F, snow showers possible.
