HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – North Alabama faces a dangerous mix of heat and storms Wednesday as temperatures climb into the mid-90s and the heat index reaches as high as 104 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms could bring strong wind gusts, lightning, and localized flooding during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, the greatest chance for storms comes between 4 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, with scattered showers lingering into the night. Rainfall totals are expected to remain under a quarter of an inch, though heavier downpours are possible in stronger storms.
The heat remains a concern before storms arrive, with calm winds and high humidity keeping the region sweltering through the afternoon. Residents in Huntsville, Madison, and Decatur should limit outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles.
Roads such as I-565 and U.S. Highway 72 may see slower travel during downpours, and power outages are possible if stronger storms develop. Crews urge drivers to keep headlights on in heavy rain and avoid flooded low-lying roads.
Drier conditions return Thursday with mostly sunny skies and highs near 90, before another round of scattered storms is possible Friday afternoon.
