Huntsville, AL – Northern Alabama is under a winter storm warning as heavy snow and icy conditions are expected through Saturday morning. Officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to poor visibility and slick roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, snow began early this morning, with temperatures dropping to near 30 degrees. The wintry conditions are forecast to intensify, transitioning to a freezing rain and sleet mix by afternoon. Total snow and ice accumulation could range from one to five inches, with ice up to three-tenths of an inch.

Drivers should remain vigilant, particularly along major roads like U.S. Highway 72 and Interstate 565, as hazardous travel conditions are likely. Emergency preparedness officials recommend carrying flashlights, food, and water in vehicles and advise drivers to slow down and increase the distance between vehicles.

Friday night brings a chance of additional snow and sleet before conditions clear on Saturday. The weekend will remain cold, with lows dipping to 18 degrees on Saturday night and patchy freezing fog possible. Sunday’s forecast offers some relief with mostly sunny skies and a high near 40 degrees.

Residents should monitor local updates and plan accordingly. The storm’s impacts could extend to morning and evening commutes today, with possible delays in services and transportation. For updates, visit weather.gov or contact local emergency services for road conditions.

Stay safe and prepare for a cold and slippery weekend.
