Columbia, SC – Lightning-related deaths remain a serious but often overlooked risk in the United States. While rare compared to other weather hazards, lightning has killed over 200 people in the past decade.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the U.S. records an average of 23 lightning fatalities per year. Though the numbers fluctuate, the risk remains steady. Certain states, including Florida and Texas, report higher incidents due to frequent thunderstorms.

Despite advancements in weather tracking, people still take unnecessary risks. Many deaths happen in open areas like parks, beaches, and sports fields. Survivors often suffer severe injuries, including burns and neurological damage.

Lightning strikes miles ahead of a storm, making it unpredictable. Experts stress the importance of seeking shelter at the first sound of thunder. The NWS reminds the public: “When thunder roars, go indoors.”

Though not as common as floods or hurricanes, lightning deaths are preventable. Awareness and quick action can significantly reduce the risk.
