Houston, TX – A relentless heatwave will grip the Houston area today, with temperatures expected to hit the mid-90s, creating hazardous conditions for outdoor activities and roadways such as I-45. Residents are urged to take precautions during the hottest part of the day, as heat-related illnesses can occur rapidly in these conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), today’s high will reach 94°F, with overnight lows remaining in the low 70s. The NWS advises Houston residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities in the afternoon. Motorists should exercise caution, especially along I-45, as the heat can cause pavement buckling and other road hazards.

The heat will persist into Friday with a slight chance of thunderstorms, particularly along the I-10 corridor. A 20% chance of rain offers minimal relief as highs again push into the 90s. Rain and storm chances increase heading into Saturday, with a 30% likelihood of showers and thunderstorms developing in the afternoon.

A cold front is on the horizon for next week, with cooler air expected to move into the region by Monday. Temperatures may drop significantly, with highs near 70°F by Tuesday. Residents can expect more comfortable weather conditions and lower humidity after the front passes.

For those in Houston, today is also an Ozone Action Day. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality warns that air quality will be poor, particularly for sensitive groups. Reducing vehicle use and outdoor activity is recommended to help limit pollution levels.
