Texas – A steady north wind whistles through downtown Houston this morning, rattling street signs and bending palm fronds along busy city roads. The breeze feels crisp but deceptively dry, creating a fire weather concern across southeast Texas.
Wind speeds continue to increase through the morning and early afternoon. Gusts may push loose debris across parking lots and open roadways.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until early evening for much of southeast Texas. Sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph.
At the same time, forecasters have issued a Red Flag Warning from late morning through evening due to very dry air and gusty winds. Relative humidity may drop as low as 17 percent, creating conditions where fires could spread rapidly.
Communities across Houston, Sugar Land, Pearland, Baytown, Conroe, and College Station are included in the warning area.
Drivers along Interstate 45, Interstate 10, and U.S. Highway 59 may encounter strong crosswinds, especially on elevated roadways and open stretches outside the city center. High-profile vehicles should use caution.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and sparks from equipment, as even small flames could grow quickly in the dry wind.
The wind gradually weakens tonight as temperatures fall toward 40°F.
Sunshine returns Tuesday and the air warms steadily. By Wednesday, highs climb into the mid-70s, bringing a more comfortable stretch of early spring weather.
Longer-range patterns suggest above-normal warmth spreading across Texas later this week, with highs approaching the 80s around the Houston area.
For now, secure loose outdoor items and avoid activities that could spark fires.
