Indianapolis, Indiana – Damaging winds could lash parts of central Indiana Wednesday afternoon as a strong line of thunderstorms sweeps through the state, followed by a stretch of dangerous heat lasting into early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, storms may become severe between late afternoon and Wednesday night, with wind gusts over 60 mph as the primary hazard. Isolated tornadoes, hail, and flash flooding are also possible. Cities including Terre Haute, Bloomington, and Indianapolis are in the enhanced risk zone.
The severe threat will transition into sweltering conditions starting Saturday, when a hot and humid air mass settles over the region. Highs through Tuesday are expected to range from 89 to 93°F, with overnight lows remaining in the mid-70s. Heat indices could soar as high as 105°F, especially in urban areas with limited shade or ventilation.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects before Wednesday’s storms and to limit time outdoors during peak heat hours this weekend. Stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon.
More warnings could be issued as both threats develop. Stay tuned to local alerts and weather.gov/ind for updates.
