Pittsburgh, PA – Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to sweep through Western Pennsylvania on Tuesday, creating hazardous travel conditions for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The National Weather Service warns of gusts reaching up to 50 mph, with rain turning to snow overnight into New Year’s Day.

According to the National Weather Service, these conditions will likely peak Tuesday evening, making roads like Interstate 79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike particularly dangerous for drivers. Officials recommend securing outdoor decorations, planning ahead for travel, and avoiding driving during the heaviest winds.

The rain will persist through Tuesday night before transitioning into snow as temperatures drop into the low 30s. New Year’s Day could bring up to an inch of snowfall, with winds calming to 20 mph. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas due to heavy rainfall combined with melting snow.

Looking ahead to the first week of 2025, the region will experience colder weather. Highs on Wednesday will remain near 25°F, with additional snow showers likely overnight. Thursday and Friday will stay mostly cloudy, with highs in the low 30s, while Saturday ushers in more chances for light snow.

Western Pennsylvania residents are advised to stay tuned for updates and prepare for potentially icy conditions on New Year’s morning. Travel safely and plan ahead for a colder start to the new year.
