New Mexico – Strong winds will create hazardous conditions across much of New Mexico today, with gusts reaching 55 to 65 mph in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for northern, central, and eastern parts of the state, while a Wind Advisory is in effect for other regions.

According to the NWS, the strongest winds are expected to occur by this afternoon, and will be accompanied by areas of blowing dust, severely reducing visibility to under half a mile. This combination of low visibility and high winds could make driving nearly impossible, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as trucks and RVs. The winds will also be capable of uprooting trees, snapping power lines, and blowing debris into roadways, increasing the risk for accidents.

In addition to the dangerous travel conditions, the dry, gusty winds will likely contribute to rapid fire spread. Areas like Albuquerque and Roswell are at heightened risk for fire danger, with a more than 90% chance of fire spreading quickly if any new fires spark. Residents should take precautions to protect outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

The strong winds and dust will persist through the evening, with more updates expected as conditions change. The NWS advises all residents to stay aware of local warnings and avoid travel through any affected areas.
