Billings, Montana – Storms packing destructive winds and baseball-sized hail are expected to hit parts of Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming Saturday afternoon, putting Billings and Gillette in the bullseye for severe weather that could last into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) is in effect for areas including central South Dakota, eastern Montana, and northeast Wyoming. Storms are forecast to develop by mid-afternoon, with the potential for supercells and fast-moving squall lines persisting through late evening.
The primary threats include hail exceeding 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts of 60 to 85 mph, especially within the blue dashed zone marked on the latest outlook map. Cities at greatest risk include Billings, Gillette, Rapid City, and Bozeman, where damaging wind and hail could impact travel, property, and outdoor events.
Residents are urged to secure loose objects, park vehicles in covered areas, and avoid non-essential travel if warnings are issued. Power outages and tree damage are possible with any intense squall line development.
The severe weather threat may extend into neighboring states, and additional watches or warnings could be issued. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
