Wichita, KS – Wichita residents should prepare for a significant weather event starting Thursday night, as widespread rain with embedded thunderstorms is expected to impact the area. Heavy rain is forecasted through early Saturday, with up to two inches or more likely in some areas. The National Weather Service warns of a high flooding risk, particularly for those in western Kansas, and urges residents to stay informed about evolving conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the precipitation will begin late Thursday, intensifying on Friday and continuing through Friday night. Thunderstorms and heavy downpours could lead to localized flooding, making certain roads hazardous, especially along major routes like I-135 and U.S. Highway 400. Flooding may affect low-lying areas and places near rivers or streams. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially in flood-prone zones, and avoid driving through standing water.

The forecast calls for an 80% chance of rain on Friday, with a peak likelihood overnight. Thunderstorms could bring gusts of wind reaching up to 26 mph, compounding the dangers of flooding. Rain is expected to taper off by Saturday morning, but minor flooding may persist until drainage systems clear.

The extended forecast for Wichita shows a clearing pattern following this storm system, with partly sunny skies on Saturday afternoon and a return to sunnier conditions on Sunday. Temperatures will remain in the mid-50s to low-60s throughout the weekend, offering a brief respite after the storm.
