Binghamton, NY – A prolonged lake-effect snowstorm blanketed Central New York, leaving communities like Taberg and Syracuse buried under significant snowfall. Reports indicate Taberg received an astounding 67 inches, while Syracuse saw up to 16 inches as of Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, snowfall totals reflect the event spanning January 1 through Sunday. This historic storm created hazardous travel conditions, with snowdrifts making accurate measurements challenging. Drivers along Route 31 and other major roadways are urged to proceed cautiously due to lingering icy patches and snowbanks.

Monday’s weather remains calm but cold, with highs reaching only 24°F. Scattered flurries are expected late Monday into Tuesday, with minor accumulations of less than half an inch. By Tuesday, a chance of snow showers may affect the area again, as high winds push temperatures down to 22°F.

The extended forecast highlights a frigid week ahead, with lows dipping into the single digits by midweek. Slight snow chances persist each day, keeping shovels and snowplows in demand. Officials recommend clearing driveways early to prevent ice buildup as temperatures drop further.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the NWS and avoid non-essential travel where snowfall totals remain extreme.
