Hanford, CA – A powerful winter storm continues to bring heavy snow and high winds to California’s Sierra Nevada region, creating hazardous travel conditions through Wednesday. Residents and travelers should prepare for potentially impassable roads and significant travel delays.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will impact areas above 7,000 feet, including Yosemite National Park, Shaver Lake, and Huntington Lake, with snow accumulations reaching up to six feet in higher elevations. Winds gusting up to 50 mph are expected to further complicate travel, particularly along Highway 41 and other mountain routes. Snowfall is predicted to intensify overnight, worsening conditions for Wednesday’s morning commute.

NWS urges residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare emergency supplies, including flashlights, water, and food, in vehicles if travel is unavoidable. Road conditions can be checked via California’s 511 service. Travelers should allow extra time for their commute and avoid sudden stops or sharp turns to maintain control on icy surfaces.

Beyond the immediate impact, conditions are expected to improve gradually by Wednesday evening, with dry but cold weather anticipated for the remainder of the holiday weekend. Temperatures in the lower elevations will stay below freezing, making frost a concern through Thanksgiving morning.
