Albany, NY – Significant lake-effect snow is forecast to continue through the weekend across New York’s Mohawk Valley and the southwestern Adirondacks, with hazardous travel conditions expected along key roadways, including I-90. Temperatures will remain below freezing, adding to risks for drivers and outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall could exceed 12 inches in some areas near Old Forge and Oswego through Sunday evening. The heaviest snow bands are likely to develop Saturday afternoon into early Sunday. Breezy conditions with gusts up to 22 mph may create blowing snow, further reducing visibility for drivers.

Residents in Albany and surrounding areas can expect lighter snow showers and flurries but should prepare for highs near 28 degrees on Saturday, dropping to 16 degrees by Sunday night. Wind chills could make it feel closer to single digits.

The NWS advises limiting travel in areas under heavy snow bands and suggests carrying an emergency kit if driving is unavoidable. Homeowners are encouraged to check their heating systems and stock up on supplies as cold air persists into the start of next week.

The extended forecast shows a gradual clearing Monday, with highs near 25 degrees, followed by partly sunny skies Tuesday. Temperatures, however, will remain well below average for early January, with lows dipping into the low teens.
