Spokane, WA – A significant winter storm will impact Washington and northern Idaho starting Christmas evening, bringing heavy snow to mountainous regions and lighter accumulations to valleys. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Weather Advisory for multiple counties.

According to the NWS, snowfall will begin late Wednesday afternoon and intensify overnight, lasting through Thursday. Mountain areas, including Sherman Pass and Loup Loup Pass, could see 6 to 12 inches of snow. Valley regions may receive 2 to 5 inches, with the heaviest snow expected Wednesday night.

Travel conditions will worsen across highways such as Flowery Trail Road, Highway 20, and Lookout Pass, where snowfall rates could reach one inch per hour. Warmer temperatures near rivers may limit snow accumulation in some areas.

Residents are urged to drive cautiously and monitor updates on road conditions at wsdot.wa.gov/travel. Snowfall in Idaho’s Panhandle could disrupt early Thursday commutes, with totals of up to 8 inches in higher elevations.

Prepare for delays and icy roads if traveling during the advisory period. Stay informed by checking weather forecasts regularly and planning accordingly.
