Honolulu, HI – A powerful winter storm is set to bring rare snowfall and icy conditions to the summits of Haleakala, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa from late Wednesday night through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the storm could drop up to 10 inches of snow on the Big Island summits, with Haleakala potentially seeing up to four inches. Freezing temperatures may also lead to a light glaze of ice on wet surfaces, making travel extremely hazardous.
Officials warn that blowing snow could create whiteout conditions, reducing visibility to near zero at times. The severe weather may make summit travel difficult or impossible, posing risks for hikers, campers, and drivers.
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for the Big Island summits until Friday morning and for Haleakala Summit until late Thursday night. Residents and visitors planning to travel to these high elevations should monitor weather updates and consider postponing trips until conditions improve.
