Hawaii, HI – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Big Island’s summit areas, where snowfall is expected to accumulate between 3 to 5 inches by 6 PM Friday. The National Weather Service issued the alert, warning of dangerous travel conditions due to blowing snow that could significantly reduce visibility.

According to the NWS, the snow is expected to continue falling as a slow-moving upper-level trough moves through the islands, impacting areas above 11,000 feet. Travelers on the Big Island’s highest points, including Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, should be prepared for slippery roads and near-zero visibility at times.

The advisory, which will remain in effect until 6 PM HST Friday, advises motorists to use extreme caution. The hazardous conditions could make travel difficult, especially for those unfamiliar with high-altitude driving. The snowstorm is an unusual April event, reminding residents and visitors of Hawai‘i’s occasionally severe weather despite its tropical reputation.

As conditions continue to worsen, drivers are urged to check road conditions before traveling and to avoid high-elevation routes if possible.
